Chapter Five
Maggie hadn’t sent a reply. Weeks had gone by and Ethan was close to giving up hope of ever hearing from her. He had been sure that Annie had been right, and so he had been light and breezy in his letter and tried to take the pressure of Maggie as much as he could. She had always taken responsibility for everyone’s trials and tribulations. He wished he could ease the burden for her, but he had no clue how to do so, given that he had no clue why she was as she was. He was determined not to lose her this time, and vowed that if he hadn’t heard anything by Thursday then he would be on his way to Boston to find her and demand that she give him another chance.
He rode in to Sun River. The day was hot, and he was thirsty and so he stopped in at the Whistling Rock Saloon. It was just a long wooden shack, with a long wooden bar – but it did what was needed. Ethan didn’t often drink alone, knew few men that did and certainly he was not a man to drink in the daytime. But his utter frustration at hearing nothing from Maggie, or from Myra’s Uncle Peter had him kicking his heels. His instincts told him to take action – but there was nothing he could do. He simply wasn’t good at dealing with that.
He walked up to the bar and he ordered a beer and a shot of whiskey. “Slow down young’un,” Tom, the bar man said with a wink as he was about to down the shot. Ethan stopped and lowered the glass back to the bar.
“You’re younger than me Tom,” he said. “And, to be honest I don’t really care how slow I take it right now.
“I know. I just like saying it! What’s up? You aren’t usually the kind to be in here at all, let alone before lunchtime. But I am glad you stopped by, not just for the coins in my cash register – but there is some mail here for you. Nobody from the ranch has been down for a while, I guess you’ve all gone a bit baby crazy,” he teased.
“Annie, Mack and Hannah have definitely,” he admitted. “But John, well he’s his usual grumpy self. I think the lad may grow on me once he is old enough for me to teach him to ride! Thanks for these.” He took the pile of mail from Tom and flicked through it. There were a few bills from their feed supplier, and two letters from Boston. One in Maggie’s familiar hand and the other in a small, neat script he did not recognize. He checked the return address and saw it was from Judge Peter Walker. At last, he might find something out that could help him to make sense of this all. Quickly he downed the shot, and then the lukewarm beer and rushed outside. He un-hitched his horse and galloped up into the mountains.
